Will Johnson’s new album

reviewed in Austin Chronicle

Sept. 26, 2019

The Austin Chronicle wrote about Will Johnson’s new album, describing it as:

"Primal, visceral, searching.

Credit the opening tone set to the dark rumble of guitar and Thor Harris' pounding percussion on 'Necessitarianism (Fred Merkle's Blues),' which unfurls a restlessness behind the revered songwriter's dusky moans...

An array of new talent, most notably Little Mazarn's Lindsey Verrill, who contributes ambient shading with backing vocals that match Johnson's lyrical pull on the stunning 'Carousel Victor.' "

Early review of Will Johnson’s new album Wire Mountain at Routes & Branches

Sept. 8, 2019

You can read an early review of Will Johnson’s new album Wire Mountain here.

Scott Foley writes: “What seems exotic early on establishes itself as more familiar and purposeful with repeated listenings, thoughtful and rewarding work that takes its place alongside years of Will Johnson's other projects. Like Molina and David Bazan and others with whom he's shared a groove, he maintains a mystery from record to record, while building a trust and an intimacy that bring us back with every new iteration.”

The Deer premiere first single “Move To Girls” from their new record coming Nov. 1st

BrooklyVegan has the premiere of “Move To Girls,” the first single from Do No Harm coming November 1, 2019. They describe it as “a lovely folk song with an atmospheric edge that should appeal to fans of other artists in or around the Keeled Scales family (like Big Thief).”

Grace says:

Tour six months out of the year and tell me you don’t re-evaluate your whole life every time you leave. My well-worn route to love and companionship had always represented only a small part of my orientation, and this song is about the changes that came about when I was able to confront it. I had been laying it out track by track for so long, but my path was full of divots and plateaus, curves and runways; it needed bridges in some places, step stones in others.

Happy birthday to David Dondero!

June 24, 2019

Wishing the happiest of birthdays to David Dondero. You, sir, are a true inspiration and such a genuine, hard-working person in every sense. Thank you for making the art that you do and for the small reminders of what life is all about—

“Eat good food. Gravitate towards the positive. Keep your mind open. Keep in touch with your friends and family. Travel as much as you can. Don’t be afraid to cut off the toxicity. Understand how a failure is a learning opportunity. Read as much as possible. Don’t be scared. Try to absorb all the art of the world. Watch and enjoy the seasons. Find the virtue in the worst of weather. Interact with animals. Breathe the air. Focus on the breathing. Take time to go swimming. Go outside and walk for miles. See as much as you can before you die. Believe in love. Love yourself. Don’t let your vices take you over. Be authentic.”

Erin Durant on Bandcamp Daily

June 24, 2019

Bandcamp Daily has shared Islands, writing “The New Orleans-bred singer-songwriter makes her home in Brooklyn and is known for taking her piano to gigs around New York City. Produced by TV On the Radio’s Kyp Malone, Islands is about love, longing, and heartbreak. Durant begins the album with “Rising Sun,” a melancholy folk tune where she repeats, “I just want you to hold me until my time is up.” On the seven-minute “Good Ol Night,” Durant’s pristine voice gleams over the piano and horns that make up the country melody. On “Islands,” the title song, Durant sings about escape and the end of a relationship. Throughout the album, Durant’s voice shines—it’s pure and unwavering. Islands is a good introduction to Durant’s solid sound.”

Click here to preorder your copy on LP or CD. The album comes out this Friday, June 28th.

Austin Chronicle premieres first track, “Cornelius,” from Will Johnson’s new album Wire Mountain

June 12, 2019

“Will Johnson’s got no problem shelving a great song. To him, “the ride” of a record is so paramount that outliers – even if they’re superb – are sent to purgatory. Such had been the case with “Cornelius.”

“That damn song,” he says. “I thought it was gonna go by the wayside. It’d been hanging around for about 10 years and I could never find the right collection of songs to tuck it into. It finally found a home.”

At last, the pounding and melodic four-and-a-half minute track slots into Wire Mountain, his newly announced seventh solo LP arriving Sept. 27 on Keeled Scales.

The stains of small-town life – loneliness, nosiness, and dysfunction – factor heavily into “Cornelius.” It’s, in fact, a remnant of time Johnson spent in Bastrop, which inspired the characters and settings in the song. The singer, painter, and multi-instrumentalist contends the lyrics aren’t autobiographical at all, but there are coincidences.

“There’s the line: ‘Tell them all about the tricks you pulled/ Seven years in Luling dodging truth,’ which is what I was doing… but in Bastrop,” he chuckles.

The track, reimagined from an old demo, thrives with a primal rack and floor-tom beat from fellow cult favorite Thor Harris and an inspired unison vocal from Little Mazarn’s Lindsey Verrill. Another Austinite, veteran underground hero Jon Dee Graham, contributes some lap steel and slide guitar alchemy to the mix.

“To have all their personalities and fingerprints on that song means so much to me,” enthuses Johnson, who remembers waking up a year and a half ago just knowing that he wanted Harris and Verrill to be heavily involved in his next record.”

Lake Mary's River Ceremony premieres over at Tome to the Weather Machine

June 25, 2018

Tome to the Weather Machine has the exclusive premiere of Lake Mary's River Ceremony alongside a really wonderful interview with Chaz Prymek of the project.

"I started this piece a long time ago, maybe more than a decade ago. If I remember correctly, I was living in an anarcho-collective (editors note: R.I.P Boing! Collective), spending a lot of time hitchhiking to and from Salt Lake to San Diego. Skating. Trying to fit in with everyone from the music scene at that time. The music scene in SLC was golden then."

You can hear the entire release ahead of its release this Friday, June 29. This release is only available on CD and digitally. Preorder your physical copy here.

Pitchfork reviews Buck Meek

Pitchfork "gets it":

"Meek delivers limber, springy songs that prioritize his songwriting and a more laid-back approach to the guitar. Before Big Thief got off the ground, he and Lenker worked together on sparse, guitar-driven tunes that they released under their own names. Meek’s new material hews closer to those proto-Big Thief songs—they share the same loose-limbed affability and a gentle spirit that evades frailty."

Consequence of Sound

May 8, 2018

Consequence of Sound premiered the third single from Years, called "Slow Rise II" alongside some of the things that influenced the song, according to Laura Colwell. Shout-outs to HEB Plus and Alice Boman included.

"Filmmaker Terrence Malick’s career has been marked by celebrations of both his Austin, Texas home and the local music culture. In a way, that makes it only fitting that his work would inadvertently birth another great Bat City band. Laura Colwell and Stephen Salisbury met while working on editing Malick’s films like Song to Song and decided to write some songs of their own. Using the studio offices as practice spaces, they formed Sun June with guitarist Michael Bain, drummer Sarah Schultz, and bassist Justin Harris.

Now, they’re stepping out of the dark of the editing room with their debut album, Years. Out June 15th via Keeled Scales, the record showcases Sun June’s embracingly warm harmonies and judiciously employed reverb. Such is the case with the effort’s latest single, 'Slow Rise II.' Colwell’s voice weaves its way gently between dreamy notes of indie folk pop like a sweetheart climbing under soft white sheets from the foot of your bed. There’s a sadness in that caress, though, as she sings, 'Go ahead and look me in the eyes/ Tell me everything will be alright/ Oh, I’m lonely too.' ”

The Bluegrass Situation premieres 4th and final single "Joe By The Book" from Buck Meek (of Big Thief)'s debut

May 7, 2018

The Bluegrass Situation premiered "Joe By The Book," the first song on the album and the final single before the album's release next Friday, May 18.

Buck gives some background about honest (and dishonest) mechanics and true acts of kindness:

“I imagined Joe, the patron saint of auto mechanics, to honor the memory of Gus at ZP Auto in Brooklyn, who kept our van alive with nothing more than his faith, until he passed away on a motorcycle, at which point the van seemed to immediately give up. It was also written to cope with the real-life disappointment of my grandparents being ripped off by a dishonest mechanic in Houston.”

Sun June's "Discotheque" video premieres via Gorilla vs. Bear!

April 26, 2018

Gorilla vs. Bear was kind enough to premiere another video from the forthcoming Sun June debut album Years today.

GvB definitely "gets it"--

"...features dreamy aerial shots of Laura cruising around an unfinished Austin subdivision, past an anonymous office park, hanging at a car wash, etc., interspersed with some old family VHS footage from a less complicated time."

You can still preorder the record on limited white vinyl (seafoam green is sold out) or classic black vinyl here.

They play the Levitation after-party this Sunday, April 29 @ Mohawk on the inside stage after Waxahatchee, Hurray for the Riff Raff, and Bedouine wrap up on the outside stage.

Buck Meek album announcement & NPR premieres "Cannonball!"

March 1, 2018

NPR Music premiered the first single from Buck Meek's self-titled debut album that we'll be releasing on May 18. The song is called "Cannonball!" and is described as

"a blast of dry heat — a sly easy-going number led by Meek's crackling guitar work and his cock-eyed vocals. The song is a thrilling elaboration of all the things that make Meek's guitar playing so compelling in Big Thief, where he serves as guitarist alongside lead singer and songwriter Adrianne Lenker. His playing in both projects is driven by a love for the sounds that make a guitar distinct — its grumbling string noise; its equal propensity to pop, slide and sigh. When he plays live, he channels the tension of his body into his dynamic playing, which is jumpy and electrifying as an ungrounded wire. Here, he matches that dynamism with his voice's own odd inflections and a twisted yarn of a story. That carefree, mischievous sound and song title befit Meek's great gift — the easy exuberance that underlies his every note." (Photo by Adrianne Lenker)
